Open Knowledge works toward a world in which the sharing of data and information is simple and ubiquitous. It promotes open knowledge because of its potential to deliver far-reaching societal benefits.
Why We Invested
Created in 2004, Open Knowledge is a community-based organization founded on the belief that the free use, reuse, and distribution of knowledge can lead to significant improvements in governance, research, learning, and business. By providing citizens with access to information on government and civic activities, for instance through the use of graphical interfaces that make information easy to understand, the organization aims to increase government accountability and engage citizens on issues of importance to them.
Open Knowledge has created innovative, accessible open-source tools and materials that have been behind some of the most significant government transparency efforts in the United Kingdom, Germany, and other European countries. Omidyar Network’s support will enable Open Knowledge to expand to new areas in Europe and beyond; and further invest in scalable technologies with the potential for massive social impact.
