Mike's work spans the firm's five global initiatives — Education, Emerging Technology, Financial Inclusion, Governance & Citizen Engagement, and Property Rights— as well as broader trends and developments in venture capital, impact investing, and philanthropy. Based in Washington D.C., Mike brings nearly 25 years of experience in both the private and public sectors across emerging markets, in addition to deep expertise in strategy, impact investing, and business focused on the low and lower-middle income markets/mass markets in those countries.
Before joining Omidyar Network, Mike was a partner at Monitor Group (now Monitor Deloitte), where he spent over ten years covering a range of sectors including telecom, satellite, and internet services. In 2007, he co-founded and led the Monitor Inclusive Markets practice, where he led a team that analyzed more than 1,000 innovative market-based approaches to social impact that serve mass market and low income customers, suppliers, and distributors across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Mike also led many sector-based research and consulting efforts in financial services, healthcare, tech/BPO, energy, livelihoods, and impact investing for a range of corporate, investor, and donor clients. His work has been published in several prominent publications including Harvard Business Review, Brookings Institution, Stanford Social Innovation Review, and reports by major U.S. foundations. In between stints at Monitor, Mike worked for the World Bank and IFC for more than five years. At the World Bank, he was part of the East Asia management team and directed the bank’s flagship innovation program, Development Marketplace. At IFC he led a program to encourage south-south investment, and earlier in his career he worked for a start-up company in the telecoms sector.
Mike earned his MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and a bachelor's degree with honors from Brown University.
